Resource: Daily readers
A practice that I have been working at putting in place, (and still fall off track with from time to time because I am human,) is having some form of daily reading in my morning routine. I think about growing up and how my parents always started their day with their coffee at the kitchen table, and the newspaper. Part of this routine was about information gathering and catching up on the news of the day, but another part of this routine was fulfillment. The comics could bring a chuckle, some of the local feel good stories could bring a smile, these were ways in which my parents centered and started their day, even if they didn’t consciously think about it that way.
The newspaper is not something that is commonplace in my day, but a daily reader is. A daily reader, or sometimes called a daily devotional, is a book that has 365 individual reflections, quotes, or prompts to help you to think a little deeper or reflect on something as you start your day. You can find a daily reader for anything these days including recovery based books, yoga, inspirational, Christian or faith based, or even random facts or something more lighthearted. Having this as part of my morning routine has felt good as far as reflecting or viewing something from a different perspective, but it also forces me to slow down and take a moment before an inevitably crazy day starts.
For this week’s resource, I wanted to share some of the daily readers or devotionals that I have crossed paths with and have really enjoyed. I have included a link to the book’s listing on GoodReads in case you want to take a look at what people have to say.
I encourage you to find one for yourself and you don’t have to wait until January 1st to dive in.
